Hongera! YAKWETU™ Wins WIPO Global Award

YAKWETU™ Online Limited, a Kenyan entertainment technology start-up that is innovatively disrupting piracy-dominated distribution channels of digital content in Africa has been selected as one of winners at this year's WIPO Global Awards presented by the World Intellectual Property Organization. The awards recognize exceptional use of intellectual property (IP) for positive impact both domestically and internationally. Now in its second year, the WIPO Global Awards honor small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) worldwide that have successfully commercialized their IP-based innovations and creative endeavors while also making a positive societal contribution.

The number of participants nearly tripled from the previous year, with WIPO receiving 548 submissions from 58 countries across various sectors such as creative industries, food, green energy technologies, and health. "We are delighted to receive recognition for our work in Content Protection (Anti-Piracy) and Monetization through our proprietary Retail service, MyMovies.Africa™. This service securely encrypts African animations, documentaries, features, and shorts, making them available for rental or purchase to customers worldwide," said Trushna Buddhdev-Patel, the Co-Founder, Content Director, and Chief Executive Officer. "As an Entertainment Technology Company, YAKWETU™ is also implementing innovative anti-piracy measures to legitimize the retailing of entertainment and educational content in Africa." The winners of the WIPO Global Awards 2023 were publicly announced during a live webcasted awards ceremony on July 11th in Geneva, Switzerland. The WIPO Global Award winners will receive a tailored one-on-one mentoring package to strengthen their IP strategies, including assistance with fundraising, partnership opportunities, and publicity support.
