Short Film ‘Act Of Love’ Celebrates 5 Honors in 13 Weeks

The short film “Act Of Love” has achieved remarkable success with 15 festival selections, 9 nominations, and 5 awards within just 13 weeks since its premiere.
The latest honors include Best Short Film and Best Scriptwriter at the Mombasa International Film Festival.
To celebrate, the cast and crew will host a free screening at The Alchemist in Westlands on January 30, 2024.
The event, in collaboration with MyMovies.Africa, aims to bring the impactful narrative to a wider audience.
With only 100 seats available, interested individuals can register for the screening.
“Act Of Love,” inspired by a true story in Nairobi, explores the challenges of motherhood and highlights Post-Partum Depression in Africa.
The film previously won awards at the Mashariki African Film Festival and Sauti Zetu Film Festival.
Produced by Blackwell Films in collaboration with Ripple Productions, the film is funded by Some Fine Day Pix, GIZ, and DocuBox East Africa Fund.
“Act of Love” was released on October 20th 2023.
Storyline
In the search of a livelihood, Juliana, a young mother, holds on to sanity by a thread, as her world is turned upside down.
After losing her job at a restaurant, Juliana downsizes to a one-roomed house in an informal neighborhood in Nairobi.
Her luck turns when she is shortlisted as a finalist by a top accounting firm. On this day, the interview is at 11:00 am.
The landlord, Mr. Mutisya, gives her a final notice to pay her rent areas the same morning.
Her neighbor, Mama Mukami, who has promised to watch her 2-month baby, has a campaign engagement for the local politician.
Sister Magdalene, despite being sympathetic to Juliana cannot allow her to leave the baby at the church due to a ‘pandemic’ of mothers abandoning their children in the compound.
Undeterred, Juliana beats the clock and makes it for the interview, her fussy baby in her arms.
A sequence of events triggered by her baby’s cries make her lose her promising interview. Broken, frustrated, holding onto sanity a thread, she questions her love for her baby.
